Colorado ski resorts — no skiing yet, but nice places and maybe still on off-season rates.
Lake Superior – rent a condo at the apostle islands for a week. It’ll be cold, but you will have time to yourselves.
Niagara Falls
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Check out the National Park System. There are lots of nice hotels in our park system, and October is Off-season for many of them.

It isn’t midwest, but Tennessee is a fab place to visit. Nashville and Memphis are both different, yet very happening cities. You’ve also got plenty of country and outdoorsy places to camp, hike etc. The people are friendly, and prices are reasonable.
